Middle East Policy Failure

Our government has been portraying for months the farce that we couldn’t put to much pressure on the fragile Pakistani Government, in order to locate and bring to justice Osama Bin Laden. It’s always been put forth that they are such a strong alley and is doing all they can to get control of the Afghanistan/Pakistan tribal region. Mr. Bin-Laden is still on the loose, occasional releasing audio tapes to confirm to us and his followers that he is alive and well. General Musharraf supposedly had an agreement with the Bush administration, to do whatever it took to keep the border peaceful and continue to arrest and kill Al Qaeda.

Recently the Former leader Benazir Bhutto was extended an invitation to come out of exile and return to her homeland. Everyone saw this as a wonderful offer and opportunity for Pakistan to move forward toward true Democracy. Mrs. Bhutto returned to Pakistan and was greeted sort of quietly and kind. As soon as she started to move around the country the trouble started, 2 bombs exploded in the car precession that she was in. Next Mr. Musharraf has declared Emergency Rule suspending all human rights in Pakistan.

The move to Emergency rule in Pakistan caught most governments off guard. President Musharraf made a statement that he would be relinquishing his military role and to move to just being a civilian leader. Even with the Emergency Rule being declared Musharraf still claims there will be elections to come in Jan. I don’t know why the Emergency Rule declaration came as a surprise to anyone, after seeing the classes with police that Bhutto’s backers are having with the police. Mrs. Bhutto was placed on house arrest after it was reported that she would be leading massive protests against the Pakistani Government.

Benazir Bhutto was freed from house arrest late on Friday, hours after she was stopped from leaving her Islamabad home to lead a rally against the president's imposition of emergency rule. Mrs. Bhutto deserves a medal in courage. Not only has she accepted the invitation to return to Pakistan. She is openly declaring massive opposition to the Government. The storyline was suppose to be Benazir Bhutto returns to Pakistan and is granted shared governmental responsibility with former General Pervez Musharraf.

General President Pervez Musharraf is a dictator, no matter how hard the Bush administration tries to keep this fact out of the issue. Musharraf has sacked most of the country's judges, put senior officials under house arrest, and ordered police to round up the majority of the opposition leadership. Mrs. Bhutto home was barricaded and she was placed under house arrest along with the arrests of at least 5,000 of her followers. Major opposition like former chief Justice Iftikhar Chaudhry was also arrested. Dictators especially in the Middle East are not going to relinquish power. It’s nit time to find a tactic and strategy to start healing and curing the ills in the Middle East while there is still a slim chance to successfully find a political solution.
