The New Media Agenda

Hillary Clinton is the frontrunner for the Democratic Party presidential nomination. Rudolph Giuliani is the frontrunner for the republican presidential nomination. We shouldn’t have to be told that daily for the next 3 months. The Iowa Caucus will be Jan 3. The media can follow them around from now until Election Day 2008 It's not going to. It does not matter people are going to vote basically the way they have already perceived the candidates to be. The media still has to keep their eye on the real problem and that is the Middle East.

In the Mid-east there is the making for turmoil that could become irresolvable for years to come. President Bush did his sit down with Iraqi leaders to try and figure out away forward toward resolving the Turkish Kurdish issue. Mr. Bush kept repeating in each line of his speech “the PKK is a terrorist organization". He then continued to say he had spoken with soon to be President Musharraf of Pakistan, to inform him of the US disappointment with his declaring Emergency Rule in Pakistan.

General Musharraf says he with step down from his military role in Pakistan and continue only as a civilian leader. President General Pervez Musharraf has declared Emergency Rule, disbanding the Supreme Court, and shutting down all media outlets but 1. The only station left on-air was PTV, the state run station which only broadcast whatever the government chooses to portray to its public. Musharraf has already detained hundreds of lawyers and opposition politicians since taking emergency powers on Saturday.  President General Pervez Musharraf pledged to quit the military after criticism from the United States for imposing emergency rule. Most in the know says this was a move designed to pre-empt a Supreme Court ruling on his re-election as president last month. Pakistan still says regardless of emergency rule, it would still hold a national election by mid-January.

The media is spending too much time on the presidential primary race. It’s forming up to tear Hillary Clinton down more and more everyday. Mrs. Clinton comes out and says the reason she is being attacked is because she is winning. The media then goes on to say she is playing the gender card because her backers like Geraldine Ferraro, called last weeks debate sexist. We understand you want to see a close race Mr. Media, but be fair as you report it. Mr. Giuliani goes out and makes light of Mrs. Clinton and the media rush to show it, because it’s more piling on Hillary. Now will the media turn and say what Mr. Giuliani sounded like with his speech impediment while trying to do an impression. Be fair Mr. Media and let the candidates defend and speak for themselves.

While being so engulfed with the upcoming primary election, there are many stories that have gone unreported. Former Acting Assistant Attorney General went to a base in Maryland to undergo waterboarding himself, to find out first hand if the procedure is torture. He then reported back to Bush administration in 2003 that the procedure was extreme torture. He was soon to be relieved from his job.

The IAEA Director General Mohamed ElBaradei´ says there was no reason for the Israelis to bomb that building in Syria. That there is no proof to support any theory that Syria was building a Nuclear Plant at that site. The Syrians finally played it smart and did not react, to what has to be seen as Israel trying to bring the Mid-East attention back to its cause. Just before this incident the Israelis had begun shelling Gaza. Mr. Media spend more time chasing issues that really concern people. Your job is to keep the public well informed, not to influence people votes one way or another. Most people have already made up their mind for which they are going to vote. Everyday coverage of Barack preaching, Hillary speaking at a college, and Giuliani clowning, are not issues worthy of your time. Report on all issues of importance, not just this rat race to become our next president.
